The Conservatory

by Beatrice Holm

In the hallowed halls of a forgotten conservatory, a pianist sits before keys that have never been struck. As she plays a score that exists nowhere but in the ether, the boundaries of reality begin to blur and bleed. A haunting exploration of artistic obsession and the music of the unseen.

A marriage, a glasshouse, and forty years of things unsaid. Holm writes the small betrayals so precisely that I kept recognising people I know. Not a loud book, but it has stayed with me for weeks — I've already reread the opening chapter twice.
